Yesterday I received my Blu-ray copy of the newly released “3 Games to Glory V.” This 3-BD set commemorates the New England Patriots’ highly successful playoff run at the end of the 2016 NFL season. As is well known, that playoff run ended with the Patriots making “the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history,” defeating the Atlanta Falcons in overtime in Super Bowl LI.“3 Games to Glory V” is an outstanding production in every way. Instead of showing highlights of the entire 2016 season, it focuses solely on the three playoff games won by the Patriots in January and February of 2017. Each of the three included Blu-ray discs focuses on one of those games: the Divisional Playoff game, AFC Championship game, and Super Bowl LI.NFL Films once again employs its brilliantly conceived combination of regular speed and slow-motion photography, stirring music, and sounds from “miked-up” players and coaches. Each game is a smooth-flowing narrative that shows every play, with Patriots radio announcers Bob Socci and Scott Zolak providing play-by-play and color commentary. The mellifluous voice of narrator Enrique Josephs adds spare but essential narration where needed. All non-essential “dead time” – the time between plays, replays, time-outs, commercials, etc. – has been removed, so each full game takes approximately one hour to watch.“3 Games to Glory V” contains a wealth of special features that are especially enjoyable. On each disc, viewers will find postgame press conferences and interviews with Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and other standout players, as well as Belichick’s game breakdown for the game featured on the disc. Several other very entertaining short features are included as well, including the original Fox Network broadcast of the entire fourth quarter and overtime period of Super Bowl LI (minus commercials and “dead time.”)Video and audio quality of “3 Games to Glory V” is outstanding. High definition video is crisp and clean, and has a wonderfully filmic quality to it. The DTS-HD Master Audio 2-channel stereo brings a surprisingly immersive, although slightly shrill, sound into my viewing area.“3 Games to Glory IV” is an outstanding addition to the long and illustrious series of NFL films that commemorate team championships. It’s a perfect complement to the “New England Patriots: Super Bowl LI Champions” BD that I purchased earlier this year. Highly recommended.
